It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year…

This snowy, crunchy, icy mess? Nah, I don’t think “paradise” is synonymous with spending a half hour digging cars out of frozen-over parking spots. I’m talking about Summer Camp Music Festival, the Woodstockian euphoria that’s a short drive away, and not so expansive that you won’t be able to find your tents or be able to see the show (yeah, I’m talkin’ to you, ‘Roo.) Run by Jay TV Entertainment, the good folks that bring us all the bomb shows at Canopy, the fest is run out of our hometown, and the absolute favorite of yours truly.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 3rd —3 days with camping for only $95! — and with artists and festival staples already announced such as Umphrey’s McGee, moe. (both will play three days), Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood (!), and Girl Talk, the price is almost the same as some of you might have paid to see the mashup mister in Urbana.

Let’s just take the easy way out and blame finals. Anyway, a combination of few touring bands and a downright soul-crushing final, and you’ve got a lull in posts.

Anyway, check back here soon for wonderful photos of tonight’s Wu Tang show, courtesy of Steve Goodwine. They’d be courtesy of yours truly, but my family chose to book my plane ticket for Florida for Sunday mornin’, so I am unable to attend. Sigh.

Chime In Time Out

So, I’m thinking about axing the calendar. It bothers me that it’s never fully updated, and between school and my handfuls of jobs, my time would be better spent focusing on putting more content on the website instead of updating the calendar. And, well, Opening Bands does a better job of it anyway.

I’m away for the week, enjoying five days off of school and eating as many mashed potatoes as I can cram in my tummy. Happy Thanksgiving, and have a great week!

Seven Eight Nine El Ten Eleven

It’s hard to categorize El Ten Eleven. With articulate bass beats and reverbing melodies, they at times have the danceability of any of those burgeoning electro-pop groups, and at others the coherent song structure and non-machine drumming of a rock duo or the funky expansiveness of — dare I say it? — a prog or jam band.

Though I haven’t heard their spanglish name on the lips of my music-minded friends’ lips over the past week, that doesn’t mean this is a show to be skipped. In fact, El Ten Eleven’s appearance at Canopy tomorrow night might be one of those off-night shows you’ll regret missing when you see their half-page story in Spin or another of the music rags. So, give it a chance. Take a night off, and check out the show. Maybe you’ll be able to tell yourself “I told you so.”

You Should See: Zmick at Canopy Club (9pm, $3 suggested donation). A good way to warm up from the first few days of snow flurries is to dance, you know.

Tuesday, November 18:

Where I’ll Be: Editing HTML.

You Should See: Piano Man (Canopy Club, 9pm, free) or Open Mic Night (Cowboy Monkey, 10pm, free) because they’re the only music-related shows going on that night.

Wednesday, November 19:

Where I’ll Be: Seeing El Ten Eleven at Canopy Club, $5 before 9pm

You Should See: At the show above, or at DJ Legtwo (Larry Gates) at Boltini. Cheap drinks, cheap food, and really good hip-hop.

Thursday, November 20:

Where I’ll Be: En route to Chicago! Peace out, school.

You Should See: Plain White T’s with The Cab and Meg & Dia (Canopy, 7:30pm, $17 in advance). If you’re a dude whose planning on going out Thursday night on campus anyway, it’s a safe bet that most underclassman ladies will be here, not White Horse.

Friday, November 21:

Where I’ll Be: Happy Birthday, Mom!

You Should See: Jordan Kaye, Schwartz Family Headin’ Home Band, Bow-dacious String Band and Oberon, The Possom King at the Virginia Theatre as part of Granny’s Porch: Lincoln and his Music, a Grand Ol Opry-style concert. $15 adults, $10 students, $5 children, starts at 7:30 pm, and I wish I was in town for this.

Saturday, November 22:

Where I’ll Be: Seeing Avett Brothers at the Blues & Bluegrass Fest in Chicago!

You Should See: Candy Foster at Cowboy Monkey (9:30pm, $5), because you know better than to see Puddle of Mudd.

Sunday, November 23:

Where I’ll Be: Working out of hometown boredom, most likely

You Should See: Colour Revolt with So Long Forgotten and Greenwood (8pm, $10 in advance), because they’re part heavy, raspy rock a la BRMC with enough melody and vocal tameness at times to create a mix worth seeing. Oh, and the audience will be way smaller than deserved, due to the Thanksgiving Break scheduling, so make up for all the sad students stuck at home that night.
