It’s hard to categorize El Ten Eleven. With articulate bass beats and reverbing melodies, they at times have the danceability of any of those burgeoning electro-pop groups, and at others the coherent song structure and non-machine drumming of a rock duo or the funky expansiveness of — dare I say it? — a prog or jam band.
Though I haven’t heard their spanglish name on the lips of my music-minded friends’ lips over the past week, that doesn’t mean this is a show to be skipped. In fact, El Ten Eleven’s appearance at Canopy tomorrow night might be one of those off-night shows you’ll regret missing when you see their half-page story in Spin or another of the music rags. So, give it a chance. Take a night off, and check out the show. Maybe you’ll be able to tell yourself “I told you so.”

Since by the end of the weekend we’re usually too lazy to even exit our apartments, here’s four reasons why you should see Christmas on Mars on Sunday:

1. Recession-friendly. As a “gourmet” cupcake shop pops up down the street from a chocolate outpost in Jennifer North and two blocks from high-rise condo living, downtown Champaign isn’t really hip to the poorness that is college folk. But, once you cross the quad-borderline, it’s clear that Urbana gets it. Not only is the flick FREE, Canopy is offering their fab $10 pitcher-and-a-pizza deal. Split it with a friend, and that pie-flick-booze combination is only five bucks. Cheap!
2. No excuses. You’re not going to do homework anyway. And hey, it’s one of your last chances to enjoy yourself before you’re stuck at home.
3. The band. Flaming Lips made a movie. A movie. They’re known for going crazy in a live setting, and by making a film, they had no boundaries, such as lights and an audience and a defined stage (which they pay no attention to anyway, considering lead singer Wayne Coyne floats through the crowd in an enormous bubble). It’s gotta be worth watching at least 20 minutes of, right?
4. The cast. Not into The Flaming Lips? Well how about Blue’s Clues, Entourage or SNL? Besides Coyne and various band members appearing in the film, Steve Burns (aka THE OLD BLUES CLUES HOST zomg), Adam Goldberg (of Hebrew Hammer and Medellin-funding fame) and Fred Armisen star in the film. Bomb.
Catch Christmas on Mars this Sunday at 9:30 and 11:30 at Canopy Club. It’s free. Cheap food and beer. See you there.

Tonight’s show ran late, so apologies for the lack of MySpace band clickables — it’s 3am, and I just realized my interview with Dan Deacon for the site is going to be tomorrow, so I’m overwhelmed. Along with a chat with the boys of Oxford Collapse and The Forms. If all works out, these puppies will be filmed — video interview! I feel like Kurt Loder — so keep checking back for more!
Here’s Thursdays Photoshopped schedule. Enjoy!:

Can you believe it? Neither can I. Keep checking back to In The Aeroplane, Over UC for show recaps, photos, video, and my newest, most exciting content — reformatted schedules! (I found the Pygmalion ones difficult to read, so I got photoshop (woo!), used it for the first time (woo!) and made new schedules, which I’ll post daily.)
Tonight, the opening night of the fest, is short, sweet and straightforward. No need to choose bands, you can simply show up to Canopy and get your fill. In the coming days, I’ll post about which band you should see over the other, but for tonight, make sure to catch the entire show, while mourning how Margot’s non-Pygmalion performance really won’t be happening now. Dabble on tonight’s artists’ MySpaces, too:

It'll be like this...but jammier!
These days, it seems like Zmick is always playing Champaign-Urbana. And, while their Monday night residency at Canopy Club will now benefit worthy causes, Zmick adds another notch to their charity bedpost with this evening’s show. As part of Greenpeace’s Global Warming Story Tour, the Zmickians will be playing an outdoor, solar-powered show across the street from the Urbana Free Library. The event lasts from 5-8pm, so no matter when you get off of work, you can still find time to stop by. And hey, maybe you can drop by Art Mart, grab some crackers and cheese, and make your own little outdoor happy hour! That is, if the weather allows you to.
While OverUC was originally informed that Zmick would be playing the entire set, a member of the band claims that Zmick is playing 5-6, Corn Desert Ramblers are 6-7, and another band (sense the confusion?) will be playing 7-8. We’re working on getting you that name, but the event will hopefully rock, regardless.

It appears that the scheduling gods have been smiling on those who like drinking and dancing, but hate the middle of the week. Every Wednesday night, FOUR venues in downtown Champaign will be hosting local DJs, so whether you want to show off your skills at the Monkey, reminisce about decades past or chill out while sipping a fancy alcoholic drink, there’s a place for you to do it. Or, if you’re up to challenge, you can stop by them all!
Cowboy Monkey: Salsa/Latin Night with DJ Bris, 10pm, no cover
Boltini: DJ Legtwo, 9pm, free
Highdive: DJ Stifler
Soma: DJ Mingram’s ’90s Night, 10pm
And, for more information about UC happenings, make sure to check out our newly updated
Calendar!

This Thursday marks a milestone for a local venue — Canopy Club has been showcasing tunes for a full decade! Ignore the 10th birthday celebration standards of bowling alleys, streamers and goodie bags (well…maybe not the goodie bags, especially if they have an empanada or two from Manolos inside) in favor of 15 bands for only $7 at the door ($5 in advance). Who needs a clown making balloon animals when there’s a slew of bands playing instead? The only thing that could make this fiesta better is a face cake, but while I hope (and salivate), enjoy the first of two installments of coverage!
Part One: Student Bands
Whether you live off campus, a block from the quad, barely heard of these groups or have dated members in a few of them, here’s your chance to click and study up before Thursday’s big bash:

Sunset Stallion, an inferable result of Santa’s recent lineup shift, features former drummer Marty O’Donnell and keyboardist Chad Warner with current Santa bassist Otto Stuparitz and never-a-member-of-but-huge-fan-of-Santa Hannah Newman. As part of an all-student-band lineup at High Anxiety Music Center’s final show in their current space, Sunset Stallion will share the stage with The Brother Whys and Snowsera tonight at 8pm. Tickets are $5, but don’t worry about wasting away your last dough of the school year on booze — it’s BYOB, so you can drink what you like, when you like.
The house is at 302 S. State St., Champaign:

Though the adage tells you not to, “judging a book by its cover” usually works for the best. Passing judgment on things you don’t know that well allows you to correctly assume that The Hills is like watching a television version of In Touch magazine and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter (shockingly) doesn’t taste like real butter.
But, every once in a while, you’re just flat out wrong. Though their name brings to mind Harleys, leather jackets and burly men much grittier than The Fonz, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club isn’t as hardcore as they would have you predetermine.
Don’t let BRMC’s Brando-inspired name scare you away — their straight-up rock with psychedelic effects that twist in and out of songs containing well-crafted vocal melodies is definitely worth coming out to Canopy for, even if you have a final tomorrow.
