WU Don’t Know How Excited I Am…

No show announcements have absolutely wowed me this semester…until now:

11-14-wutang

WU-TANG. CANOPY CLUB. DECEMBER 13TH.

(Seriously, this is such a big deal that I went doomsday font on you.)

Ok, ok, everybody breathe again. According to the Smile Politely article that broke the story,

“…the lineup will be missing original members Ol’ Dirty Bastard (R.I.P.) and Method Man (who will be wrapping up a tour with Redman the night prior to the group’s Canopy performance), fans can expect Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA, Inspectah Deck and the rest of the Clan to bring the noise in support of their recent release Soundtracks from the Shaolin Temple.”

While this is legitimately some of the best music news I’ve heard in a while, it poses a problem — The Hood Internet is also booked to play this evening (at midnight), as are Oceans, World’s First Flying Machine and Common Loon as part of the four-night Fall Semester Showdown at 9pm.

The 13th was a great lineup to start, so here’s hoping they don’t cancel anything. But three totally different yet across-the-board fantastic shows in one night at Canopy? Could be one for the ages, folks. One for the ages.

Update: Unfortunately, Oceans, World’s First Flying Machine and Common Loon will not be playing on the 13th, and will try to be rearranged into the now-three night festival. The show is set to be Wu Tang earlier, Hood Internet afterwards.

Put The “Wheee!” In Weekend

Next weekend starts Thanksgiving Break. Though looked forward to by all as a well-needed week off of school, Thanksgiving isn’t just about lying around in your jammies and watching Ren & Stimpy like you used to every time you were off for school as a young’n. It’s a week full of family (parents!) and high school friends you don’t even like anymore (they just don’t get it!) And there’s the arguing about borrowing the car, the nosy siblings, the chores…blech.

And though there’s some perks (fresh baked cookiessss!), it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go all out party like it’s your last weekend living under your own roof. Because it is. So go wild, and soak up your fill of collegiate fun before it’s back to ma and pa:

Tweedytastic.

Sometimes you drag your feet. And sometimes, you’re stuck slaving over a mind-crushing workload from one of your professors for a project that is tough and just really insanely time consuming. (Hypothetically, of course.) And sometimes, you just drop the ball and have to admit you made a mistake.

This is so over-announced that if you tell me you didn’t know, you’re probably only saying so to make me feel better, but still:

Jeff Tweedy!

Foellinger Auditorium in Urbana, Ill.

Saturday, January 31st

$20 Students, $25 Public

(Tickets on sale Thursday, Nov. 20th)

Yeah, yeah, you already heard from the 10 announcements and 3 Facebook invites and your guy friends freaking out about it, but still. Pretty exciting news, considering Star-Course has had a record low of one show this semester. It’s not their fault — just a bout of bad luck that led to unpredicted show cancellations — but it’s nice to see their newest announcement is something to look forward to.

Arts and Snacks

Don’t have plans for tonight? Good. Now you do.

Take a looksie at this note that just landed in my inbox from Jim at Parasol:

“Esteemed rock-n-roll poster artist Art Chantry is visiting C-U this week, with an art gallery exhibition at Parkland starting today and various lectures and luncheons over the next few days. But what I’m writing to tell you about is the little post-reception PARASOL PART-AY we’re throwing here at Parasol HQ. There will be acoustic performances by Angie Heaton, the New Ruins duo and a special piano set from former Wolfie and Like Young guy Joe Ziemba’s new one-man-band Beaujolais. The public is welcome. Admission is free.”

Snacks! Drinks! Music! No cost! Heavenly, right? Visit the Parasol HQ at 303 West Griggs St in downtown Urbana between 8:30 and 11pm tonight. The prospect of munching on cheese cubes and listening to tunes is enough to get me there, and it should be the same for you, too.

Cancelled, Confusing, and Coming

The November 11th Rusted Root show and the November 19 Shiny Toy Guns shows have been canceled. Also, for December 13th’s Hood Internet show, World’s First Flying Machine will be opening, along with Oceans and Common Loon. I think these bands are great, but really? Opening for a mash-up duo?

The last Hood Internet show at Canopy was full of drunken, sweaty thrashing, pushing, and halfway-dancing from how compact everyone was. Hopefully, WFFM will be able to jazz the crowd up for a moshingly good time, but I’m struggling to figure out that lineup choice. (Though, at that show, Brian McGovern was one of the crowd’s craziest, so who knows what’s up their collective folk-rocky sleeve.)

New calendar coming today! Stay tuned.

What?!

Frightened Rabbit! At Courtyard Cafe?! And over Winter Break?? I don’t know if I’m more excited they’re coming to UC, confused why they’re not at Canopy, or stunned that no students will be on campus when they’re here. Maybe the date is just a placeholder. If you know any info, share in the comments area!

Update: They’re playing  January 22nd! Yahoo! See you all there. (Thanks Ben, for the tip.)

Unlucky? That’s What You Think.

This just in:

Thursday, November 13th – Umphrey’s McGee at Canopy

and

Saturday, December 13th – The Hood Internet at Canopy.

The 13th of the month isn’t looking so spooky anymore, now is it?

Headlights, Camera, Action.

Check it out — CNN loves Headlights just as much as we do!

(Yet another reason to not watch Fox News.)

UC’s Flight Attendants

We’re expanding! And just like a pregnant woman, it’s a wonderful feeling. The kicking! The growing! The event coverage! Meet the two kids who will be assisting with overUC here and there:

Steve Goodwine, a professional photographer with an affinity for dancing down to his bones at live shows.

Erin Gillman, a co-host for video interviews and all-around mischief maker with a love for giraffes, sparkling juices and Mr. Steve Goodwine. (How could you not?)

They’re great, and hopefully you’ll love them as much as I do. Keep your eyes peeled for the noobs!

No Go For The So & So’s

This just in — Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s will not be playing Wednesday’s show at Canopy Club. Details are coming regarding if the whole show is canceled, or if Dear & The Headlights and Motion City Soundtrack will still be playing.

UPDATE: Dear & The Headlights, Motion City Soundtrack and Dear Future will be playing this date.
