You Are Cordially Invited To Fill My Dance Card

Print

Have you ever felt out of place in your neon short-shorts? Been the awkward kid dancing with lanky arms at the bar while everyone else is doing their sweet SouljaBoy moves? Or, do you ever have the urge to just stay at home instead of going out because if you hear a Coldplay mega-mix or Katy Perry’s crap tunes one more time, your brain might explode?

Well, In The Aeroplane, Over UC, EatCu.com and Canopy Club have got just the thing for you: PHYSICAL CHALLENGE!

Starting Feb. 4th, the venue will be hosting a FREE indie dance-rock night every Wednesday, where DJ Belly will be spinning all of the tunes we love but can only hear when we’re in control of the laptop at a house party. Passion Pit, Justice, MGMT — throw in some Red Bull drink deals, a bevvy of kids who want to let loose and no cover, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for success.

For more info, check out the Facebook page for the event. Until then, start stretching. You’ll thank me later.

Ladies Night

Sara Bareilles is comin’ to town! The Star-Course presented show will be March 1st at 7:30 pm, and tickets, which go on sale Feb. 5th for students and 6th for public will be $20/$25.

Um, not only will this be the best place to be in town if you are a single man (read: girlfest), but her live performances are awesome because the girl’s got pipes, especially on the ballad “Gravity” :

Oh yeah. There’s gonna be more tears in Foellinger than when Big left Carrie at the altar. For more info, check out Star-Course‘s website. That is, if you’re not too busy YouTube-ing every live song she’s ever sung.

If you get a chance for some free time tonight, too, there’s a good lineup — Joe Pug, Tracey & Tricia, Carl Hauck, Jonathon Childers and Stan McConnell (acoustic!) — at the Canopy. But, for tomorrow, art + music + potential cheese cubes is enough to make this young girl squeal. See you there.

New Show Announcements!

Toubab Krewe at Cowboy Monkey on February 20th
Cornmeal at Canopy on February 28th
Headlights at Canopy Club on March 14th
Lotus at Canopy Club on April 2nd
Dan Deacon at Canopy Club on May 6th
As long as a stage doesn’t break at the last one, it’ll be a good semester.

The Late (Not So) Greats

Bad news — Jeff Tweedy’s 1/31 show is sold out. If you require easy access seating, there’s a handful left, but if you haven’t gotten them yet, they’re all gone. Dry those Tweedy Tears, though — World’s First Flying Machine, Sunset Stallion and Butterfly Assassins are playing at Canopy that night, so you’ll be able to fill your ears with good music that evening, regardless. (Thanks to Fender for the ticket update!)

The Republic Of…Wait, What?

New Year, new news. Such as… how you might not know that The Republic Tigers are playing Canopy Club on Thursday (1/15). Accidentally misspelled on the site and given second billing to Vanatica, the boys will be stopping by Urbana at a highly unfortunate time. Unfortunate for them, that a ton more people would be able to go one week later, and unfortunate for yours truly, who will be holed up in a mansion at Allerton for a leadership retreat, unable to hear the brilliantly catchy “Buildings and Mountains” live. The first band signed to Chop Shop records, ex-Star Course manager and music supervisor extraordinarre Alexandra Patsavas’ record label, there’s a reason these boys have been featured on a gamut of television shows, and it’s not just because of their sweet hookup. Enjoy their tunes…for me. And for yourself.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year…

This snowy, crunchy, icy mess? Nah, I don’t think “paradise” is synonymous with spending a half hour digging cars out of frozen-over parking spots. I’m talking about Summer Camp Music Festival, the Woodstockian euphoria that’s a short drive away, and not so expansive that you won’t be able to find your tents or be able to see the show (yeah, I’m talkin’ to you, ‘Roo.) Run by Jay TV Entertainment, the good folks that bring us all the bomb shows at Canopy, the fest is run out of our hometown, and the absolute favorite of yours truly.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 3rd —3 days with camping for only $95! — and with artists and festival staples already announced such as Umphrey’s McGee, moe. (both will play three days), Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood (!), and Girl Talk, the price is almost the same as some of you might have paid to see the mashup mister in Urbana.

Check out the list of artists already announced and get ready to spend that holiday moolah here.

Yawn.

Did You Know…

That the opening act for Willie Nelson on his Dec. 6th date at Assembly Hall is this guy?

Interesting. This, embarrassingly, makes me want to go to the show twice as much.
