Paper Planes, Formatting Change

I got word last night that WPGU has changed their format, straying from their indie-swaying tendencies to be more alternative/mainstream. Details coming soon (too downright busy to find out more at the moment), but if you know some news about it, comment away!

GO SEE THIS SHOW.

Overshadowing is a problem existing primarily in high school musical theatre classes and among teenage girls planning joint birthday parties, but tonight, it hits Champaign, and hits it hard. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, a little-known group with a long name that oozes pop-rock that begs you to bop along, will be playing Courtyard at 8pm. But, with LM5′s concert-artist-showcase-award-show-but-not-award-show show tonight at Highdive, MSHVB, and their upcoming live show, have gone unnoticed.

If you’ve got the time and the dime to attend both shows, I’d suggest it (especially since this one costs $3/$5), but if you have to make a choice, pick the Seattle-based underdog. They’re impressive, catchy as hell, and their drummer is a 14 year old kid. Sure, seeing Mt. St. Helens might mean you don’t find out who won “Band With The Oldest College Student In It” until later this evening,  but hey, if you’re wondering who’s gonna nab the title of Local Band Whose Name Rhymes With Smelsinore, I think it’s pretty obvious: Lorenzo Goetz! Wait, they’re still around, right?

(See you at Courtyard.)

Like Twitter, But Less Irritating

Quick update — things have been s-l-o-w on the site the past few days, since I just got an unexpected part-time intern job, but there should be new things up soon. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Mountain Goats: No recap coming, I accidentally slept through. (I’ve been sick lately from not sleeping, my body’s been crashing.)
  • Hold Steady: Will be up on the site tomorrow, so help me Passover-loving God
  • NKOTB: My back almost went out Sunday, couldn’t hobble to Assembly Hall. (Not only am I actually as sickly and brittle-boned as I sound, but I was REALLY bummed about this one.)
  • CHICK COREA/JOHN MCLAUGHLIN: YAYYY!! Unbelievable. Content up soon, including a videooo.
  • Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band: Playing THURSDAY at Courtyard. Yes, there’s a local award show, but try to tag-team the evening because they’re fantasmic (listen!). Review coming Friday.

Keep checking back for more info about everything from how there’ll be more video interviews on the site soon (hopefully, of course) to details about Record Store Day (next Saturday!)

Time to hit the books, Excel spreadsheet and Word docs! overUC and out.

Don’t Miss This.

The lineup:

Brian Felix – piano

Peter Kenagy – trumpet

Rick Deja – saxophone

Chris Nolte – bass

Brent Jordan – drums

They’ll be covering music by Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Lennon/McCartney and some of Felix’s own tunes. Go!

And There You Have It. (UPDATED!)

Sandwiched between the Illini Union’s walk-up Espresso Royale counter and the tiny stage Mountain Goats and John Vanderslice will be gracing in less than 48 hours was a tiny, open-doored mirage of musical goodness:

3-31-courtyard

People – I’ve stumbled across our town’s equivalent to the hatch. Apparently, Courtyard Cafe will have their “office” open to sell tickets to upcoming shows (cough Hold Steady presale cough) until Friday, when tickets will be sold at the door. The person manning the desk for the night had no idea what time or when the spot will be open next (he was too preoccupied pushing a button every 108 minutes) but I’d suggest cutting through the Courtyard tomorrow as many times as you can until it opens, to avoid the painfully long lines Friday evening.

UPDATE: The presale will be happening until midnight tonight (Wednesday), and from noon until 8pm tomorrow, when Mountain Goats/Vanderslice start.

So, problem solved.  Now, go! Fill your pockets full of Hold Steady tickets and your ears full of good music!
