Things Of Importance.

Onesies: Don’t miss out on the second PHYSICAL CHALLENGE, tonight at Canopy Club! Not only is there a $3 Red Bull-vodka special, no cover, music giveaways and insane music, but FREE EMPANADAS AND PIZZA from 10-11pm! Who cares about a little rain? Come out to Canopy and dance the night awaaaayyyyyy.

Twosies: There’s a big benefit show/battle of the bandz at that same venue tomorrow night, 7pm. It’s an early one, so you’ll be able to catch The Brother Whys, Vanattica,Dr. Doctor Ph.D, The Third Flight, Jack Pine Savage, The Tip of the Nyberg and Storefront Lawyers, all while helping Illini Dance Marathon.

Threesies: Mother Nature is such a tease. Am I right?

Friday, V-Day.

There’s a lot going on tonight — a gaggle of Urbana boys performing at Courtyard Cafe, the Charles Lane quintet at Iron Post, Keller Williams at the Canopy. But, over at Cowboy Monkey for just $7 is a V-Day benefit, a concert aiming to help stop violence against women both locally and world-wide, and proceeds from the show will benefit A Woman’s Fund in addition to helping women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It’s a great lineup, and even if you can’t catch all six bands, popping in for one or two is worth it, considering the cash money is going to a good cause. (I myself, stuck indoors during this heat wave with a pile of homework, can only catch a set or two but otherwise would be spending my Friday night and Saturday mornin’ reviewing the entire thing start to finish since it’s gonna be that good.) Set times are as follows:

9pm: Tree Thump

9:45pm: The Brother Whys

10:30pm: Common Loon

11:15pm: Sunset Stallion

12pm: World’s First Flying Machine

12:45am: Elsinore

I Was There: Physical Challenge, 2/4

[Physical Challenge, Canopy Club's weekly dance party, 2/4/09]

Mother nature, you ruin me. Dwindling the weather to zero degrees didn’t help the  journey to the event as much as we’d hope, but, considering the flurry of text messages a few of us got from frozen pals,  next week should be packed to the gills. Wednesday’s showing, though, as personally terrified as I was that none of the crowd would start grooving, turned into body-banging mash of randemonium, including a group of young’ns dancing on the stage.

And then there’s the music — considering Physical Challenge is in some sense ‘sponsored’ by this site, I’m not going to pretend something’s good when it’s not. So, all bias aside, these DJs are unreal. I was only able to capture a tiny bit of it on video, but you really, really have to see DJ Belly and DJ Wildcard bring the place down. If you’re an untrustworthy visual listener, though I present this — a video reel of footage from this past Wednesday’ Physical Challenge:

Be there, or be a fool. (Even squares know to come.)

See you next Wednesday,

THE RIGHT STUFF. LIVE.

No, that wasn’t the tornado alarm — that was just me shrieking over the fact that NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK ARE COMING TO ASSEMBLY HALL. Can you even imagine running into them at Za’s? Or getting a quick workout at the Arc? Or going out drinking at Kam’s?!?! I’m out the door and unable to elaborate on how incredibly mind-blowing this is, but tickets go on sale this Saturday (2/7) at 10 a.m.,  and you know you wanna be in a row where Joey can see your homemade sign professing your feelings for him, so buy ‘em fast. There’s some sort of American Express pre-sale for their April 5th show that I’m highly uninformed about, but if anyone knows the key to closer tickets, lemme know.

UPDATE:

Right stuff…wrong price. Check this out:

Apparently, the recession has hit everyone….except the people involved with the New Kids on The Block tour. Fitting, since they’re stuck in the ’80s. (Zing!) Seriously though — just because people in our town can waste money on unnecessary goods like overpriced cupcakes doesn’t mean they’re going to shell out hundreds to be reminded of their childhood. Spice Girls tickets were only $100, after all. Which I only know ‘cuz I, uh, heard they were, uh, that much.

Thanks, oddly enough, to my mother for sending the above tip in an e-mail, titled “Prices are so high, we do have an American Express??” Gotta love a mom’s unconditional need to bring boy bands to their daughters.

A Friendly Reminder…

Tomorrow is the first PHYSICAL CHALLENGE at Canopy, and it’s going to be wonderful. 10pm, no cover, show your face and your moves. But, if the promise of cheap Red Bull beverages and bomb giveaways doesn’t lure you in, maybe this will:

It’s a 25-minute mix DJ Belly made that will clue you into just how wild the dance party will be. See you there!
