Tim Fite:

A show that begins by lassoing the crowd and pulling them toward the stage is expected to be crazy, and Tim Fite definitely didn’t disappoint. In his personal circus for which Fite was the ringmaster, he led the audience through tunes and games, both musical and not. When he wasn’t onstage with bonafide crazy eyes, playing in front of a screen featuring a video of him in a wheelchair performing all of the instrumentations, Fite was telling stories and jokey songs accompanied by juvenile cartoons, easily the most memorable part of the show. Some were recited — such as “What Dogs Eat” and “Jojo and Bobby Stab A Mothafucka”, the latter being about a cat and bird who share a sandwich before their killing spree — and others were sung in unison with everyone watching whatever was about to unfold. A version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, an instructional “tour of the body” that fostered audience participation twiceover was entertaining, but not as much as the cute, catchy song about burning things down, which quickly changed to a humor-based riot when the object in question was a police station. With an assistant who wandered through the crowd, talking throughout songs and serenading people one by one, it was an unexpected opener surprise, and unarguably one of the best choices to preface something like Man Man.

Man Man is a band that proved themselves to be hyped, but never over-hyped. Unlike someone such as, say, Dan Deacon, Man Man’s shows don’t make you feel like you’re supposed to dance — the irrestistablility lies in the fact that you just can’t really help but do it. There seems to be a lot of artists out right now who are more about a crazy show than the actual music (cough Dark Meat cough), but with Man Man, the focus is on the brilliant music and the rest naturally falls into place. Banging on pots and drums, the men faced each other as usual, gallivanting and playing with glazed-over eyes, stuck in their own face-painted, feather-wearing, peyote-infused jam session, all while inviting the crowd in on their jagged melodies and wild times.
