OMG CMJ CHM TO NYC

For the next week, I will be attending CMJ in New York, catchin’ some bands and eatin’ some junk food and parading around the city enjoying my youth. Regarding the pending Broken Social Scene review, there’s some pretty badass photos from it, and they will be posted tomorrow as I hop through different airport terminals and completely overpay for internet access.

The site will be a bit quiet through next Sunday due to the trip, but no news is good news, right? Eh.

Enjoy your week. Go see REO Speedwagon.

PS – Since I mistakenly saved this note as a page instead of a post last night, I’ll throw up my favorite photo from last night’s show:

Even gravity can’t hold that Canning man down. More photos, a review and some fantastic videos, all coming soon!

Working For The Weekend

I made like a tree and…left town through Monday. See you soon with reviews of Throw Me The Statue and Death Cab For Cutie!

Hey, Mr. DJ

Yesterday, my bagel-loving people were forced to go an entire day without food, and with tummies rumbling, we made it through the daytime sans sandwich or sauerkraut. And, though it was a challenge, I’m giving you the opportunity to try it out for yourself, just with your ears instead of your intestines.

A Friday night in a campustown is a guarantee that at some point you’ll hear a Pussycat Dolls-Rihanna-Journey megamix. But tonight is different from all other nights — OverUC forbades you from doing it!

(Ok, it’s not as scary as God’s wrath and possible non-inscription into the Book of Life, but hey, there’s only so much fearmongering you can do via a local music blog.)

Why ponder if a song is sung by Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus? Why wait in the bar lines on-campus with 45 year olds wanting to relive their glory years? Instead, gather round the radio (or a computer, like a new-age fireside chat) from 10 – midnight and listen to DJ Mertz spinning on WPGU 107.1 (or take a listen at the217.com, for you computerized folk.) Good tunes, good times, no generic pop-rap-rock tunes. Happy Yom Kippur Musicur!

Throwing And Posing

Tomorrow night, The Red Herring will fill its multicolored walls with the sounds of Throw Me The Statue and David Dondero at 10pm. In case your Friday night plans are still up in the air, give the headliners a chance and see why the evening should be spent at their show:

Throw Me The Statue:

From the fantastic land of Seattle, the four boys who comprise Throw Me The Statue create pop-rock tunes infused with catchy repetition that rotates between instruments (namely electronic drums and frolicking guitar bits) and a cheeriness reminiscent of SSLYBY’s first album. “Lolita,” their bonafide single, is enjoyable in the best of Vampire Weekend ways and is sure to make you miss summer, regardless that it was beautiful outside today in Urbana-Champaign.
