From start to finish, The Avett Brothers’ Sunday night show was stunning. Not only are their songs so well-crafted, catchy and inherently dynamic that they practically borderline perfection, the boys perform with such an excited vengeance that it’s as though they’re the hottest rock band in the world, except that in this case, unlike most, their music is actually good.
When a band plays string instruments so hard that they grimace, they deserve to be respected, and in the Avetts’ case, it easy to do so. Playing the regular slew of favorites — see the videos below for some of them — they skipped over my personal favorite, the rough, raspy “Colorshow,” but made up for it with the show’s highlight, which came at the end. After the voicemail segment of “Pretty Girl From Chile” (inconveniently, where the video ends), the stage went dark, and the band slowly erupted into an incredible display of electric-infused music that only solidified that if they made a transition away from bluegrass, it would still be just as good.
But, as impressive as it was, the beginning of the encore was just as fascinating. Together, the Avett Brothers collectively give goosebumps, but Scott Avett’s solo rendition of the heartbreaking “Murder In The City” (available as a free download here) was beautiful enough to make even a stone cold bitch like myself want to cry. A band whose music makes fans literally jump up and down and scream, but also brings a tear to their eye? Absolutely unbelievable.
