Tonight, Tonight

Itll be like this...but jammier!

It'll be like this...but jammier!

These days, it seems like Zmick is always playing Champaign-Urbana. And, while their Monday night residency at Canopy Club will now benefit worthy causes, Zmick adds another notch to their charity bedpost with this evening’s show. As part of Greenpeace’s Global Warming Story Tour, the Zmickians will be playing an outdoor, solar-powered show across the street from the Urbana Free Library. The event lasts from 5-8pm, so no matter when you get off of work, you can still find time to stop by. And hey, maybe you can drop by Art Mart, grab some crackers and cheese, and make your own little outdoor happy hour! That is, if the weather allows you to.

While OverUC was originally informed that Zmick would be playing the entire set, a member of the band claims that Zmick is playing 5-6, Corn Desert Ramblers are 6-7, and another band (sense the confusion?) will be playing 7-8. We’re working on getting you that name, but the event will hopefully rock, regardless.

Hooray For Hump Day!

It appears that the scheduling gods have been smiling on those who like drinking and dancing, but hate the middle of the week. Every Wednesday night, FOUR venues in downtown Champaign will be hosting local DJs, so whether you want to show off your skills at the Monkey, reminisce about decades past or chill out while sipping a fancy alcoholic drink, there’s a place for you to do it. Or, if you’re up to challenge, you can stop by them all!

Cowboy Monkey: Salsa/Latin Night with DJ Bris, 10pm, no cover
Boltini: DJ Legtwo, 9pm, free
Highdive: DJ Stifler
Soma: DJ Mingram’s ’90s Night, 10pm

And, for more information about UC happenings, make sure to check out our newly updated Calendar!

I Was There (For A Short While): So Many Dynamos, 8/26

(So Many Dynamos, 8/26 at Anniversary Plaza, a fancy name for the Quad side of the Illini Union)

When it’s the first week of classes, there’s not much of an excuse to not see a show, especially when it’s free. But, when there’s the added bonus of free food — which, like the show itself, was not advertised well — there’s no excuse that could suffice.

People came for the hot dogs and some stayed for, well, the hot dogs, but Seth and Smile Politely were right — So Many Dynamos was not to be missed. The low attendance was no testament to the band’s skill; there’s enough genre-crossing potential that fans of both Umphrey’s McGee and Panic! At The Disco could get behind their beats. You may have missed the show, but don’t miss out on the band — check out the links, below the photos.

Gimme Some Gibbard

The presale for Death Cab for Cutie’s October 12th show at Assembly Hall starts today, and lasts until Wednesday at 10pm. At $35 a pop, Death Cab might be possessing your paycheck along with your heart, but there’s no lines and no painful trips to the Ilini Union — all you need to do is go to the site, choose your seats and use the (utterly creative) password CUTIE. Tickets officially go on sale Friday, so snatch up your good seats before the plebians snag them.

Making Plans, Seeing Bands

The boys are back in town. And by “boys”, I mean the obnoxiously loud, party-loving college students who blast music and never stop screaming. So, just in time to let you (and myself) escape the scene, In The Aeroplane, Over UC’s Calendar is up and running, so check it out!

Up! Up! Up! Up! Up! Up! Up! Up! Up! Up!

Hello, World!

Throw on your oversized hipster granny glasses and take a looksies at this — Pygmalion Music Festival is featured on Pitchfork, the center of the musical world!

Can you hear the roar of the crowd? See the red carpet? Feel the heat from lightbulbs and cameras flashing? Our town’s festival has officially begun its 15 minutes of fame, and hopefully, there’s more to come.

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun.

It also flies when you’re spending a week doing everything you put off since New York, and visit every doctor you’ve ever had. My body is riddled with fun little viruses and my brain is clattered with packing for school, freelancing, jobs, buying new glasses, wrapping up internships, seeing friends for the first time in a year, eating lunches with grandparents and, oh yeah, playing with my iPhone. (finally!)

I know I said I’d be back, but it ends up that I (legitimately) had a lot of other non-computer things to do. So, apologies directed towards anyone who checks the site and sees the same post that has been up for a fucking week, but I promise, next week, overUC will be up and running.

Don’t believe me?  I’ve been working on physically getting the site’s name out during Pygmalion (hint: overUC accessories) and, hey, the calendar tab is missing up above for a reason…

Am I Allowed To Consider Myself An Investigative Journalist After This?

The Pygmalion Music Festival schedule isn’t coming out until September 1st, but I’m as impatient as the rest of you. So, I did some internet sleuthing, and came up with the following: a preliminary schedule of the headlining acts:

Sept. 17th:

Artists at Venues TBA: Times New Viking

Sept. 18th:

Canopy Club: Dark Meat, Dan Deacon and Monotonix

Krannert Art Museum: Murder by Death and Oxford Collapse

Sept. 19th:

Artists at Venues TBA: Black Mountain, The Hood Internet

Sept. 20th:

Canopy Club: Headlights

Krannert Center: Yo La Tengo, High Places, and Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter

Venue TBA: Asobi Seksu, The M’s, Grampall Jookabox, PWRFL Power

Headlining Bands with TBA dates:

Thao Get Down Stay Down, Titus Andronicus, Decibully, Pattern is Movement, Owen, Catfish Haven

 But wait — there’s more.

While looking, though, there was one interesting thing I noticed. A lot of the bands playing PMF are also playing The Hideout Block Party, for obvious reasons, like how it’s a day later and only a few hours away. A lot of the bands playing Pygmalion are also on Matador Records. And, there’s one band that’s on Matador, playing the Block Party in Chicago, has nothing going on the night before (9/20), and must have a relationship with the guys at Canopy, considering they played Summer Camp Music Festival, which is run out of the same office.

That band? The New Pornographers. Now, I don’t want anyone to bust a nut over this, but wouldn’t it make sense if this band will be playing, but just hasn’t been announced yet? If they’re not, then I apologize for getting your hopes up. But, if they are…this festival just got that much better.
