One Man’s Music Is Another Man’s Download: Elsinore’s The General EP

With a genre switch that resulted in a brilliant new sound and a rejection of a Local Music Award nomination, Elsinore seems to be upgrading through their new transformation, and not just because their little “e” is all grown up. First came the insanely well-crafted “The General,” then their adorable new website and soon, a long-awaited full-length release. But first, a Christmas miracle for the freezing, windy weather of May — The General EP!

Yes friends, it’s true! Click and listen to your heart’s content:

2. “Antonymity” (studio b-side, recorded July 2007)

Your Guide To Canopy’s 10th Anniversary: Part…Not Yet.

I know, I wish it were here too. But, a dreaded 1:30 pm final has not been studied for and an essay due at the same time has not yet been finished, which means I shouldn’t even be spending time to post this. But, the preview will be up pre-show (say, when I’m celebrating my failure success of completing the. world’s. hardest. course.) around 4pm. Apologies all around, but school, unfortunately, has to come first at the moment, like it has for the past three days.

Wish me luck,

overUC

UPDATE: I just got a wonderful music surprise I’ve been waiting for, and will post it this afternoon. The wait will be worth it, I prom-promise!

Your Guide to Canopy’s 10th Anniversary: Part One

This Thursday marks a milestone for a local venue —  Canopy Club has been showcasing tunes for a full decade! Ignore the 10th birthday celebration standards of bowling alleys, streamers and goodie bags (well…maybe not the goodie bags, especially if they have an empanada or two from Manolos inside) in favor of 15 bands for only $7 at the door ($5 in advance). Who needs a clown making balloon animals when there’s a slew of bands playing instead? The only thing that could make this fiesta better is a face cake, but while I hope (and salivate), enjoy the first of two installments of coverage!

Part One: Student Bands

Whether you live off campus, a block from the quad, barely heard of these groups or have dated members in a few of them, here’s your chance to click and study up before Thursday’s big bash:

One Man’s Music Is Another Man’s Download: The M’s

As you wrap yourselves in fleece jackets and scarves during the shockingly cold first few days of May, it seems as though summer might never come. But, earthquakes and bizarre weather aside, summer releases are good to go, even if you have to wear snowshoes in July. (Hey, at this point, who knows?)

The M’s newest disc, Real Close Ones, will be released by the lovely Polyvinyl Records on June 3rd, a few days before the boys visit Schubas in Chicago (June 7th and 8th) for two 21+ shows with Centro-matic

And, even though you don’t know if you’ll be in rain gear or cutoffs the day it hits the streets, stick to your PJs for the moment, and download two tracks off of the newest album, courtesy of Spinner.com and PolyvinylRecords.com! (Psst — I recommend ”Big Sound”)

Sunset Stallion: Goodbye to a Venue, Hello to a New Band

Sunset Stallion, an inferable result of Santa’s recent lineup shift, features former drummer Marty O’Donnell and keyboardist Chad Warner with current Santa bassist Otto Stuparitz and never-a-member-of-but-huge-fan-of-Santa Hannah Newman. As part of an all-student-band lineup at High Anxiety Music Center’s final show in their current space, Sunset Stallion will share the stage with The Brother Whys and Snowsera tonight at 8pm. Tickets are $5, but don’t worry about wasting away your last dough of the school year on booze — it’s BYOB, so you can drink what you like, when you like.

The house is at 302 S. State St., Champaign:

But, if you only read this map as “well, that’s far from my house,” here are two bus route from on campus that will help you get there, courtesy of the MTD website:

Take 50 GREEN

Depart ILLINI UNION ENGINEERING SIDE at 7:59 AM
Arrive STATE & WHITE at 8:11 AM

Walk from STATE & WHITE stop to 302 S STATE ST

Take 20N RED

Depart ILLINI UNION ENGINEERING SIDE at 7:44 AM
Arrive WALNUT & LOGAN at 7:52 AM

Walk 0.26 mile(s) west from WALNUT & LOGAN stop to 302 S STATE ST

See? Now you’ve got no excuse for not going.
